Calif. Aid Request Spurned By U.S.
06-15-2009  •  Washington Post
Top state officials have gone hat in hand to the administration, armed with dire warnings of a fast-approaching "fiscal meltdown" caused by a budget shortfall. Concern has grown inside the White House in recent weeks as California's fiscal condition has worsened, leading to high-level administration meetings. But federal officials are worried that a bailout of California would set off a cascade of demands from other states.

More Problems Than Solutions in Medicare Report
06-15-2009  •  Washington Post
As Congress and the Obama administration seek to restrain potentially crushing increases in health-care spending, the report by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission is emblematic of the larger debate: long on problems and short on solutions.

Social Networks Spread Iranian Defiance Online
06-15-2009  •  NY Times
As the embattled government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appears to be trying to limit Internet access and communications in Iran, new kinds of social media are challenging those traditional levers of state media control and allowing Iranians to find novel ways around the restrictions.

From Twitter:

A critical network upgrade must be performed to ensure continued operation of Twitter. In coordination with Twitter, our network host had planned this upgrade for tonight. However, our network partners at NTT America recognize the role Twitter is currently playing as an important communication tool in Iran. Tonight's planned maintenance has been rescheduled to tomorrow between 2-3p PST (1:30a in Iran).

Republicans Out Of Power
06-15-2009  •  Ayn R Key
Republicans are never more dangerous to the cause of liberty than when they are out of power. It is when they are out of power that they might actually attract the support of libertarians, even those who do not have a short attention span.

Ron Paul: “J. Neil Schulman’s Alongside Night may be even more relevant today than it was in 1979. Hopefully, the special thirtieth anniversary edition of this landmark work of libertarian science fiction will inspire a new generation of readers to learn more about the ideas of liberty and become active in the freedom movement.” --Congressman Ron Paul

Facing Reality

Howard Blitz
German literary giant, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who lived during the time of the founding of the United States, articulated “None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who think they are free.”  We the people must face that reality if individuals want true freedom.    The Declaration of Independence states that all human beings have the inalienable right to pursue happiness.  It does not say that individuals have a right to happiness, just the right to seek it out however the individual defines happiness.  The Declaration of Independence also states that the only purpose for the existence of government is to make sure all individuals have this right secured, i.e. no one initiates force on another interfering with their right to pursue happiness.    What all this means is that individuals do not need any permission from their government to pursue their happiness.  They may need permission from other individuals or private businesses,

Abracadabra Obama: Healthcare Reform is a Shiny Object

The fact remains that this public move to healthcare by Obama seems nothing less than a ruse to get us off the scent of the bailout. To get us to stop scrutinizing the complete lack of enforcement, investigation, reform or action...  Read Full Story

Peter Schiff: Political Risk Hits Property Rights
06-15-2009  •  wealthdaily.com
The fact that two of the highest-ranking government officials can conspire to violate both securities laws and private property rights is abhorrent to everything America supposedly stands for. If they get away with it, which I believe they will, the precedent and the message will be chilling.  Read Full Story

Police K9 Handler Fabricated False Dog Alerts To Get Convictions
06-15-2009  •  The Agitator
Police and prosecutors were apparently convicting people of violent crimes based almost exclusively on the “testimony” of a police dog whose handler claimed has extraordinary powers.   Judges and juries apparently bought this crap for years. It finally came to an end when Judge Gilbert Goshorn ordered the dog to perform a basic tracking test after Preston claimed the dog had alerted to a suspect’s scent at a crime scene six months after the murder. The dog failed.  Read Full Story
