A Liberty Moment - “Committing Treason in Search of Liberty”

In his acceptance speech for the presidential nomination at the 1964 Republican National Convention, Barry Goldwater said, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.  And moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”  The founders went a step further and committed treason to seek liberty.  They committed an illegal act to do the right thing. 

Two hundred and thirty-five years ago fifty-six individuals pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to the craziest notion ever thought of by mankind; that individuals are supreme and subservient only to their Creator and no one else.  John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who both died on July 4, 1826, and the other founders of the United States plunged their society into treason against their government leader.  The document they scripted not only explained the necessity of their actions to the world and the philosophy upon which they based their sedition, which includes the idea of inalienable individual rights and the sole purpose of government, but also listed twenty-seven complaints against their leader not too dissimilar from the complaints many have of recent American government officials whether they be republican or democrat. 

The complaints resonating from the past to today include the erection of a multitude of new offices sending out swarms of government officials in an escalating orgy of terror legalized looting, and wholesale seizure of private property to feed the appetite of arrogant and rapacious bureaucracies.  The creation of a multitude of laws and regulations beyond reason or humanity, subverting both the words and intent of the United States Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence for which practically any person could be arrested, imprisoned, or impoverished. 

Whether under democrat or republican leadership oppressive and destructive taxes annually steal over half of the incomes earned by individuals and there is currently a call for even more.  Individuals are compelled to testify against themselves by completing endless compulsory reports and are made into unpaid government spies and tax collectors destroying peace, security, and freedom. 

Practically every sector of the economy is controlled by government edict and individuals are treated as common criminals by being fined, having their property seized, or imprisoned if not obeyed.  The financial security of individuals is destroyed through debauched currency looting the real wealth of the citizenry.  In the process jobs are destroyed and private initiative stifled with suffocating regulations and oppressive bureaucracies. 

The electoral process has been subverted through unjust and exclusionary ballot-access and campaign finance laws.  Vast sums of tax-extorted monies are used to create a congressional monopoly and an imperial presidency.  The justice system is corrupted by the creation of endless numbers of technical crimes against the state and crimes without victims.  As a result vices are made into crimes, dissent into treason, and sensuality into perversion. 

In direct violation of the United States Constitution U.S. troops are used repeatedly to invade and reduce foreign countries to ruin without a declaration of war by congress.  Relations with other nations are perverted using the power of the United States military to support foreign despots.  Nations are bribed with foreign aid, foreign trade is restricted and massive quantities of weapons of death and destruction fomenting discord, repression, and war throughout the world is exported.  In the name of the war on drugs war on the people of the United States is now declared invading their homes and businesses spreading terror across the United States.
 
As a result of the illegally waged wars on many nations and innocent people, Americans are now put at risk from terrorists and are becoming hated by more and more individuals around the world.  The government welfare system created by both democrat and republican leadership and financed by extorted tax revenue and inflation has not only made a mockery of the idea of individual liberty and responsibility but has exacerbated the immigration situation out of control. 

The ideas found in the Declaration of Independence are the standard by which individuals can measure government activity.  The suggestion that whenever any form of government for which it was established, namely to protect the inalienable rights of the individual, becomes destructive of that end, and that it is the right of the people to alter or abolish such government and to institute new government, “laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness” is not much discussed anymore. 

However, by understanding the ideas in the Declaration and utilizing the United States Constitution for guidance individuals today do not have to commit treason to seek liberty as the founders were forced to.  The founders left an incredible legacy in order that individuals can change or even abolish their government through the orderly elective process.  The current American empire can revert back to the American constitutional republic it once was.  However, it will take today’s individual to commit his and her life, fortune, and sacred honor to those same principles of liberty found in the Declaration of Independence as did the founders. 

By reading the Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen united States of America one realizes the commitment those brave souls gave for us, their posterity.  The focus, though, is on the long term picture of individual liberty and responsibility and not the short term outlook of individual security since individual security can only really result from individual liberty.
