Guitar, drum and keyboard-playing robots crank out the more traditional portion of the Bit-52's sound, while a DECTalk Express speech synthesizer and a pair of flatbed scanners chime in with the vocals. It's a great sound that at once feels foreign and nostalgic for those born in the dark ages when the real B-52's were riding the radio waves.
The Bit-52's have actually been reunited for a better reason than simply giving us a bit of nostalgia. Their new song, a cover of the B-52's "Private Idaho", is actually a bit of promotion for a Kickstarter project raising funds for the nonprofit group Art Rocks Athens, which hopes to preserve the memory of the vintage rock scene of Athens, Georgia. Not so coincidentally, that scene was what spawned the B-52's themselves.
