GameFace VR headset could be an Oculus Rift killer

• http://www.dvice.com, Raymond Wong
Created by GameFace Labs, the GameFace is a Rift-like pair of goggles with a 2.5K display (aka 2560 x 1440 resolution), which provides 78 percent more pixel clarity than the Rift (DK2) and Project Morpheus's 1080p (1920 x 1080 resolution) display.

Although the latest Crystal Cove (aka DK2) prototype's 1080p HD display is a big improvement over the original 720p dev kit, its pixels are still visible (aka "screen door effect") — a constant reminder that you're just wearing a screen on your face.

For VR, a screen that's sharper than HD is going to be a must. Ed Mason, GameFace's CEO told Road to VR:

"The upgrade to 1280 x 1440 per eye is monumental. Individual pixels are hard to detect at first glance, making it a more immersive and comfortable experience in every single game and experience that we’ve tried. A lot of the ‘presence’ described by devs at the Valve [prototype VR headset] demonstration can be attributed to their use of higher resolution (and lower persistence) panels, which has a noticeable impact in suspending disbelief and tricking the brain."
