Tomato Season ~ Veggie List 7/12/14 ~ Egg Sale ~ Fresh Roasted Chili Peppers

• Tonopah Rob

It's tomato season at the farm stand and you should see all the mammoth sized tomatoes.  Last week the boys picked just over 1200 pounds of tomatoes.  That total includes cherry tomatoes, freezing and canning tomatoes and "the chickens get the rest tomatoes".  I know they would have picked more but a rattlesnake gave them fair warning to stay away from the last section of the Far Plot.  I think it's the third Diamondback siting in two weeks not to mention the super large Kingsnakes and Red Racers seen around the farm on a daily basis.

Tomatoes!! Oh my golly!  Y'all need to come to the farm stand and get tomatoes.  All kinds of colors, flavors and textures.  And the Cherry Tomatoes, boy howdy do they pack a punch of sweetness.  The little yellow cherry's are sinfully delicious. Google your favorite pasta recipes, marinara sauces and hone up on your canning skills.  (There's a recipe posted at the bottom of the veggie list to help guide you on freezing and canning tomatoes).

A really big thank you goes out to all of you whom have signed up for a CSA share and a high-five to all of you whom have renewed your share.  It's really important to support your local farmer, especially an all natural nature grown farm like Tonopah Rob's.

    Canned Tomatoes Recipe

  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Tomatoes
  • Salt
  • Lemon Juice
  • Quart Jars, sterilized
  • Per each jar add two cloves of garlic, one-quarter to one half of an onion.  One teaspoon of salt and lemon juice.  Bring a pan of water to a simmering boil. Add whole cleaned tomatoes and watch for the skins to crack, it only takes a few minutes or less.  Put hot tomatoes into an ice bath.  Add peeled tomatoes to each jar, stuff 'em full but leave a quarter-inch from the top of the jar.  Put your lid on the jar and hot pack or pressure cook. Google hot pack instructions or pressure cooking instructions.

    Freezing Tomatoes Recipe

  • This is really simple.  Rinse tomatoes. Remove all blemishes and rinse again.  Put whole tomatoes in freezer bags and freeze. You can also add onions and garlic. No salt or lemon is needed.
