On Thursday, July 31, the Arizona chapter of Americans for Prosperity Foundation will celebrate the birthday of the late Nobel laureate economist and free-market advocate Dr. Milton Friedman with two free speaker events in Phoenix and Tucson. (Scroll down for RSVP information for both events.)

"How did liberals get to be the way they are today?"

Good question!  That will be the subject of the talk by Dr. Donald Critchlow of ASU's Center for Political Thought and Leadership, when he speaks at the AFPF-Arizona's Milton Friedman Day luncheon on July 31 in Phoenix.

At our July 31 event, Critchlow will argue that it is a mistake to see the Obama Administration's sweeping agenda as a single man's vision. Equally flawed is the now-common argument that today's liberalism is simply a continuation of the progressivism that Woodrow Wilson embodied a century ago. According to Critchlow, today's Left has embraced a more radical vision for transformative change: to remake nearly every aspect of American life.

Donald T. Critchlow is the author of When Hollywood Was Right: How Movie Moguls, Film Stars, and Big Business Remade American Politics (to be published by Cambridge University Press), as well as Takeover: How the Left's Quest for Social Justice Corrupted Liberalism. In addition, he has authored and edited many other books including The Conservative Ascendancy: How the GOP Made Political History (Harvard University Press, 2007); Phyllis Schlafly and Grassroots Conservatism (Princeton University Press, 2005); and Intended Consequences: Birth Control, Abortion, and the Federal Government (Oxford University Press, 1999).

Our Tucson/Pima County speaker on July 31 will be Dr. David Schmidtz, Kendrick Professor and founding Director of the Center for Philosophy of Freedom at the University of Arizona. Here is how Dr. Schmidtz describes his talk:

Homo sapiens became the wisest of primates around forty thousand years ago, when we learned to make deals with strangers. Many steps we've made in our social evolution involved expanding the spheres of mutually advantageous commerce. Paradoxically, we are inclined, perhaps even biologically programmed, to see commerce as a zero-sum game: that is, we see people who profit by selling us food or tools as getting rich at our expense. Eons ago, though, brave souls began to imagine what human beings could do, and saw that the key to a better life was trade. Thus began our liberation from the brutality of life as cave-dwellers.

Which brings up an interesting question: Are modern Americans in danger un-learning the lessons of 40,000 years? Find out on July 31!

Donald T. Critchlow serves as Director of the ASU Center for Political Thought and Leadership. The Center's mission is to promote a greater understanding of the foundations of democratic society through undergraduate education, scholarly research, and civic involvement.
