Iranian officials stepped up efforts to crush the remaining resistance to a disputed presidential election, as security forces overwhelmed a small group of protesters with brutal beatings, tear gas and gunshots in the air. Intelligence agents shut down an office of a defeated presidential candidate, saying it was a “headquarters for a psychological war.”

Investigators look at 'anomalies' in track circuit

[sabotage?] Investigators are looking more closely at a stretch of track near the site of a deadly commuter train crash after finding abnormalities in equipment that senses trains and transmits speed commands. The deadliest accident in Metrorail's 33-year history occurred Monday when a train plowed into another train that was stopped. The moving train was controlled primarily by computer at the time of the crash, but there is evidence the operator tried to slow it down.  Read Full Story

A Chicago police officer avoided jail time today for pummeling a woman who was tending bar, even though prosecutors produced a previously unseen video showing him beating someone else at the bar hours earlier.   Anthony Abbate was sentenced to two years probation for beating Karolina Obrycka in February of 2007. He could have gotten up to five years for the attack, which was captured by the bar's security camera and shown around the world.   Read Full Story

Law enforcement slams Arizona concealed gun bill

[There is a danger that people would realize how useless Law enforcement is ED] Law enforcement officials on Thursday said public safety would be put at risk by proposed legislation that would allow Arizonans to carry concealed weapons without state permits and allow those with permits to take concealed weapons to schools when picking up and dropping off students.

State Sen. Sylvia Allen, the bill's sponsor, said public safety would be enhanced, not diminished, if her bill becomes law, particularly in the state's urban areas.

One of several gun-rights measures advancing in the Legislature, the bill would replace the current misdemeanor for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, with one prohibiting use of a concealed weapon for violent or other serious crimes.
