Reverse Mortgages Leave Seniors at Risk, GAO Says
6/30/09
•
The Washington Post
The Department of Housing and Urban Development has left elderly borrowers vulnerable to abusive lending practices because of shortcomings in programs that offer reverse mortgages, according to a report released yesterday by the Government Accountability Office.
Reverse mortgages, which are usually backed by HUD's Federal Housing Administration, enable seniors to withdraw equity from their homes. The loan and the accumulated interest do not have to be paid back until the owner dies or sells the home. But the upfront costs are substantial....

06-29-2009
•
Linda Hunnicutt
TREASON:
A crime that undermines the offenders government
disloyalty by virtue of subversive behavior
treachery: an act of deliberate betrayal
Treason is an act of disloyalty or betrayal of trust to your own government. Examples of treason include assassination of a state figure, fighting against your own nation in a war, assisting enemy combatants, or passing vital government information to the enemy. Historically, treason has been severely punished, because an act of treason can destroy a nation. In the modern day, a conviction of treason is accompanied at a minimum by a long jail sentence and a heavy fine, and may merit the death penalty under certain circumstances.

After Call From Senator's Office, Small Hawaii Bank Got U.S. Aid
06-30-2009
•
Washington Post
Sen. Daniel K. Inouye's
staff contacted federal regulators last fall to ask about the bailout
application of an ailing Hawaii bank that he had helped to establish
and where he has invested the bulk of his personal wealth.
The bank, Central Pacific Financial, was an unlikely candidate for a
program designed by the Treasury Department to bolster healthy banks.
The firm's losses were depleting its capital reserves. Its primary
regulator, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., already had decided
that it didn't meet the criteria for receiving a favorable
recommendation and had forwarded the applica

Next Segment Of The Housing Market To Crash: $1+ Million McMansions
6/30/09
•
Business Insider
The new hallucination for most strapped McMansion owners is that they'll "rent the house for a year and then sell when the market comes back."
The happy theory here is that, yes, prices are temporarily depressed, but when the green shoots really take hold, we'll go roaring right back to 2006 levels again.
Most real-estate agents will be eager to tell you that they agree with this theory. What they won't be able to tell you, as Mark Hanson of the Field Check Group points out, is why.

NAIS ~~~ to Own a Politician
06-30-2009
•
Darol Dickinson
Let’s call him Mr. B. He was a very auspicious Texas businessman and Mr. B planned to stay that way. His success had come hard, taking the highest risks, and no half pint politician was going to pass some bleeding heart law to thwart his achievements. Mr. B volunteered to serve as Republican Fund Raising Chairman and consistently rolled in the donations. He was highly respected by Texas candidates because he sucked in the bucks. With no small shock to many, here he is on TV, at a Democratic rally, right next to the podium by the featured speaker. What is going on? To cover all bases, he was also the leading contributor to the Democratic party. Mr. B. said, “I must know for certain that when I need special things, no matter who wins, I can make one phone call and " I own them.”

Lawsuits Filed After Individuals Wrongly Suspected/Convicted Based On False Dog Alerts
06-30-2009
•
USA Today
Two federal lawsuits are casting a harsh spotlight on an investigative
tool long beloved by American law enforcement: a bloodhound's nose.
Much like in traditional lineups, the dogs (allegedly) link human scents left at crime scenes to samples from suspects.
In each case, the suits allege, Pikett's dogs called attention to the wrong person. Both former suspects have been cleared.

'Go after ACORN,' judge says
6/30/09
•
Pittsburgh Tribune Review
A district judge who held another ACORN worker for trial Monday on election law violations urged prosecutors to go after the real culprit, the organization that employed him.
"Somebody has to go after ACORN," Senior District Judge Richard H. Zoller said about the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.
"It's happening all over the country. All you have to do is turn on the television," he said, referring to voter registration fraud charges brought recently against ACORN and its workers in Nevada.
