Was Independence Day a joke?
07-07-2009  •  Daniel Heller
Okay, so there weren’t 5,000 people who showed up as there were on April 15th. There were reports of 200-300 Phoenicians, at most, who attended the Fourth of July Independence Day Tea Party. (The “Tea” is an acronym for “Taxed Enough Already.”) That doesn’t seem like much of a movement. Of course, it was approaching 110 degrees. And I can’t talk because I didn’t attend either. I took a trip up to Dewey and Gerome with my girl to get out of the heat for the one weekend we both had some time off work. I know"I betrayed the cause...  Read Full Story

Armed mobs spread ethnic strife in China's west
07-07-2009  •  AP
Mobs of Han Chinese wielding meat cleavers and clubs and groups of Muslim Uighur men beat people in the streets of the capital of China's Xinjiang region Tuesday. The government imposed a curfew as it tried to stem communal violence after a riot that killed at least 156 people.

Members of the Muslim Uighur ethnic group attacked people near the Urumqi's railway station, and women in headscarves protested the arrests of husbands and sons in another part of the city. Meanwhile, for much of the afternoon, a mob of 1,000 mostly young Han Chinese holding clubs and chanting "Defend the Country" tore through streets trying to get to a Uighur neighborhood until they were repulsed by police firing tear gas.

U.S. consumers fall behind on loans at record pace

Soaring U.S. unemployment and a shrinking economy drove delinquencies on credit card debt and home equity loans to all-time highs in the first quarter as a record number of cash-strapped consumers fell behind on their bills.

Delinquencies on the value of all card debt soared to a record 6.60 percent from 5.52 percent in the fourth quarter as more cardholders relied on plastic to meet day-to-day expenses, the American Bankers Association said.

Pity the Poor Rich - Switzerland under attack
07-07-2009  •  Bill Bonner for LewRockwell.com

“Switzerland at war with the rest of the world,” begins an update from colleague, Cecile Chevre, in Paris.

The Swiss usually manage to stay out of wars. They do it by being heavily armed. Even the yodelers have softened up lately, but until recently every able-bodied man was required to serve in the Swiss Army. He had to keep his rifle at home…and each year he had to prove that he knew how to use it.

During WWII, the Germans considered invading Switzerland. According to legend, a top German general met with Switzerland’s top military man on the border.

“We have twice as many men on the border as you do,” said the German. “What would you do if we launched an attack?”

“The answer is very obvious,” replied the Swiss general. “I would tell each of my men to shoot twice.”

But now Switzerland is up against even worse odds. Switzerland has long been a haven for people with money. And life is getting tougher for the rich…as well as for those  Read Full Story

11 Ways To Prepare for Civil Unrest
07-07-2009  •  Claire Wolfe for LewRockwell.com
People Are Angry, and Politicians Are Nervous

The most remarkable thing about civil unrest is that there hasn't been more of it.

Politicians are making a hash of this country " and much of the rest of the civilized world. We know it. They know it. They know we know it. But we don't feel we can do anything much to stop them.

That right there is the pre-condition for civil unrest " when people are frustrated and politicians are nervous.

Worse, that was how things stood before last fall's crash. Before pols on both left and right launched the biggest mass transfer of wealth in history " transferring our wealth (what we had left of it!) to their friends on Wall Street and in the banking industry. In other words, that's how things were before things got bad!

Global warming is based 100% on junk science. The most vocal promoters are not interested in the details of physical science. They are interested in two things: political control over the general public and the establishment of international socialism.

Jim Rogers To Short US Treasuries
07-07-2009  •  Jim Rogers for LewRockwell.com

The dollar and U.S. Treasuries are both likely to slide as soaring government debt in the world’s biggest economy undermines confidence in its assets, according to Jim Rogers, chairman of Rogers Holdings.

“The government is printing lots of money and borrowing even more; that’s not the basis for a sound currency,” he said in a telephone interview today from Singapore. “The idea that anybody would lend money to the U.S. government for 30 years at 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 percent interest is mind-boggling to me.”

For a guy dedicated to social cooperation and international peace, to freedom and non-violence, to private property and sound money, to our libertarian heritage and our great heroes, Lew sure has a lot of opponents. There are the freedom haters. But the regime pays well, in fact and in prospect. Others will offer their souls to the state because it seems cool, and so uncool to be a dissident in fascist times.

But there are many of us who love this site, and who think it’s essential to the cause of liberty, here and all around the world, and we love liberty. Not only must LRC survive in that cause, it must thrive. My dream: to see it challenge the very top sites in news and opinion. It is possible.

But first LRC must survive. Please help me make sure it does. Help me make sure
