08-11-2009  A week after the Securities and Exchange Commission announced it had settled the matter, Judge Rakoff questioned whether the $33 million agreement with Bank of America was adequate. He refused to approve the deal, saying too many questions remained unanswered, including who knew what and when about the controversial payouts.

The data raise fresh doubts about the strength of global trade and whether the world can rely on China's growth miracle to power recovery. Separately, the Baltic Dry Index " measuring freight rates for bulk goods " has tipped over, dropping 25pc since late July. The shipping figures buttress reports that China has stopped building up stocks of metals and other commodities after a spate of frantic buying over the early summer.  Read Full Story

Will Americans follow orders to take flu shots?
8/11/09  •  Worldnet Daily
Alarmist language over possible outbreaks of swine flu as well as a series of moves by the federal government are fueling fears federal agents will soon be forcing citizens to be vaccinated " prompting one political party to launch a pre-emptive defense against any such effort. The Constitution Party, a fast-growing alternative to the dominant Democratic and Republican parties in many elections, has come out strongly in opposition to any "mandatory injections" of "potential toxic (H1N1) 'swine flu' vaccine." Citing the Fourth Amendment, which says, "The right of the people to be secure in their persons … shall not be violated," Constitution Party National Committee Chairman Jim Clymer said the issue isn't that complex. ...  Read Full Story

Industrial Hemp Farming Act HR 1866
08-11-2009  •  www.votehemp.com

[Hemp being "against the law" is more stupid than the Federal Reserve Ed]  The Industrial Hemp Farming Act has been introduced two times previously, in the 109th and 110th Congress. It has never received a committee hearing before. In this, the 111th Congress, H.R. 1866, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2009, has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.

Committee members are from California, Florida, Illinois, New York, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. If you are in their district it is especially important that you write to them and ask for their support by co-sponsoring H.R. 1866 and working to get a hearing for the bill.

We already have the support of companies that produce hemp products that would be able to present testimony before a committee in Congress. Your letters will help us get a hearing for the bill.

When Furries Attack: The Furry Convention descends on downtown Denver
08-11-2009  •  Westword
Furries -- members of the strange but strangely endearing "furry fandom" -- gathered in Denver over the weekend for one of the dozens of furry conventions that take place throughout the world each year, at which furries get together in their animal costumes and do stuff. Among other activities over the weekend, the furries had a parade. These are pictures of that parade. I suspect they don't quite capture the weirdness of the scene downtown on Saturday, but judge for yourself after the jump. Photos by the aptly named Anthony Camera.

President Obama may be using his political action committee funds to stomp out eligibility lawsuits brought by Americans, as he has paid more than $1.35 million to his top lawyer since the election. Obama for America, Obama's 2008 political campaign, merged with the Democratic National Committee in January and is now known as Organizing for America. The grassroots army that some refer to as "Obama 2.0" is still collecting financial contributions. Federal Election Commission records for "Obama for America" show that the lobby organization has paid international law firm Perkins Coie exactly $1,352,378.95 since the 2008 election. Soaring deficit may defy forecasts
08/11/2009  •  USA Today
stagnant unemployment, shrinking tax revenue and a struggling economy threaten to quadruple the size of last year's federal budget deficit, raising more questions about the timing of costly proposals to overhaul health care. As the White House and Congressional Budget Office (CBO) prepare to release new deficit estimates this month, several economists say the news is likely to be as bad as or worse than forecasts. "This is going to be a very depressing outlook," predicts former CBO director Douglas Holtz-Eakin, top adviser to Republican John McCain in last year's presidential election. "They have just a nightmare in terms of these health care bills, which do nothing but make things worse." A fiscal year 2009 deficit of $1.8 trillion was anticipated by the White House, $1.7 trillion by Congress. Reaching that level would produce a deficit four times last year's $459 billion deficit, just as Congress is considering health care overhaul plans that could   Read Full Story

It’s possible the economy can bottom sometime in the fall or the winter, but it will be pretty rough sailing ahead, especially for the next quarter or two,” said Michael Darda, chief economist at MKM Partners in Greenwich Connecticut. In a separate recent interview, Celente went further on the subject of revolution in America. “There will be a revolution in this country,” he said. “It’s not going to come yet, but it’s going to come down the line and we’re going to see a third party and this was the catalyst for it: the takeover of Washington, D. C., in broad daylight by Wall Street in this bloodless coup. And it will happen as conditions continue to worsen.” “The first thing to do is organize with tax revolts. That’s going to be the big one because people can’t afford to pay more school tax, property tax, any kind of tax. You’re going to start seeing those kinds of protests start to develop.” “It’s going to be very b  Read Full Story

Migrant Mexican farm workers vote to quit union
08/11/2009  •  CBC
Migrant Mexican farm workers in Manitoba " the first in Canada to join a union " have now voted to decertify. The farm employees have decided they would rather not be part of the United Food and Commercial Workers union because they can make more money working longer hours, without mandatory overtime pay, which they say caused employers to cut back on their hours. Heladio Martinez-Perez is a foreman at a farm west of Winnipeg. He said under the collective agreement the workers negotiated two years ago, they could not work more than 70 hours weekly. "Today, we're gonna start at 6 o'clock and maybe finish at 8. That is a big difference, the union and not the union. We don't need overtime or $1 extra per hour when we can make more hours. That is a good thing for everybody."  Read Full Story

I didn't see anyone stepping up. 3) In reference to #2, the only "tough" question to be asked was by a LITTLE GIRL who referrenced the people OUTSIDE who had anti-obamacare signs. Next year’s census will determine the apportionment of House members and Electoral College votes for each state. To accomplish these vital constitutional purposes, the enumeration should count only citizens and persons who are legal, permanent residents. But it won’t. Instead, the U.S. Census Bureau is set to count all persons physically present in the country"including large numbers who are here illegally. The result will unconstitutionally increase the number of representatives in some states and deprive some other states of their rightful political representation. Warren's panel report really can't be viewed as anything but a veiled call for another bailout. It urged the Treasury to either expand its current program to soak up troubled assets, the Public-Private Investment Program, “or consider a different strategy.” Since Warren believes in government regulation starting with how you tie your shoes in the morning, the thought of she means by a "different strategy,” should cause any liberty loving person to shudder. Facebook Just Became More Important to Search
08-11-2009  •  www.webpronews.com/
Real-Time Search Competition Heating Up Facebook has begun rolling out a new version of its search feature, which it began testing with a select few last month. Of course, this would be real-time search, in the company's latest effort to move into Twitter territory. The announcement of Facebook's real-time search comes hot off the heels of their big announcement about the acquisition of FriendFeed, which comes with a pretty nifty real-time search engine of its own. But that's a different story.

Interestingly enough, Google's got its own project in the works that looks to have some real-time search implications. The company has announced a search update called "Caffeine," which among other things is aimed at indexing content faster.
