People in prisons have a lot of several things.  One of them is time.  They have tons of time on their hands.  Time to think.  Time to do.

People have read about my coverage of the John Stuart case.  He has been out of jail on bail for a few months now.  During the almost year he was held in the 4th Street Madison Jail he had a lot of time on his hands.  He had time to help expose the jail for the torture chamber hell hole it is.  He had time to help those detained with their legal proceedings.  He was really disliked by the jail house staff.

John is a devout Christian.  Part of that time he spent holding religious teachings to his fellow jailed detainees ---virtually all of whom are unconvicted and awaiting trial, in some cases for years.  He spent time contemplating the Old and New Testaments, his religion and one of the ideas he came up for teaching was a disk with words of meaning.  A disk has two sides.  So on one side of a disk labeled "Hope" had words that form ideas that are found in the Bible.  He made words of opposite meaning directly on the other side of the disk for discussion too.

I am sure the diagram was refined with use over time.  He used this as a teaching tool to successfully bring the word of God to the fellow prisoners.  And now that he is out he has made this disk into a real permanent disk of 2 ounces of aluminum powder pressed into sharp relief under 30 tons of pressure.   I say this because when I felt the heft of this gold colored medallion I could not believe it was aluminum from its weight.  I put this out for those who might consider it useful.

What: John Stuart "Movie Night' Fundraiser this Saturday Night!

Where: Click the link below to find out!

Meetup Description: FRIENDS OF JOHN STUART
FUNDRAISER

We will be having a movie-night fundraiser for John Stuart at the Freedoms Phoenix Workshop located on the southwest corner of 7th Avenue and Indian School Road, Phoenix, Arizona (in the strip mall behind the check cashing place), Saturday, May 9, 2009, beginning at 6:00 p.m. All donations welcome!

The movie we will be showing is The Gang. The Gang is a documentary about the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), a former minor tax collection department, now a billion-dollar agency, and how it harasses, oppresses, intimidates, and terrifies small businesses and decent, law-abiding citizens. To view the official website, go to:

John Stuart is in the fight of his life -- for exoneration, liberty and freedom. He needs our help and support until he can get this nightmare behind him. Won’t you join us in supporting John? Thank you. For those of you who don’t know John’s story . . .

On an early January evening in 2008, John Stuart and his wife were happily spending quality time together, talking and laughing, hanging up “Ron Paul for President” signs. Life was good. In fact it was better than good. They each had good jobs, a beautiful, custom home, several cars, and spent much of their leisure time following their joint passion -- dancing.

In the blink of an eye, that life was violently and unalterably changed forever, never to be the same.

While sitting at an intersection waiting for the light to turn green, a man – a complete stranger to John and his wife -- jumped out of the driver’s side of his car, ran around to the driver’s side of John’s car, and started viciously attacking John and his wife, threatening to kill them both. He was a raving lunatic. John and his wife believed they were going to die. This unprovoked attack ended with the attacking man being shot and killed. The attacking man’s autopsy showed the man’s blood alcohol level to be two and a half times the legal limit. The man’s website boasted that his favorite pastime was to get drunk and go find someone to beat up!

Eleven separate witnesses -- none of whom knew any of the parties involved and had no dog in the fight -- confirmed the version of events given by John and his wife to the police. According to the clear language of the law, John should have been released and the matter forgotten. However, despite the witness statements and clear and convincing evidence, for some unknown reason the state has continued to prosecute John, lie to the grand jury (not once but twice, after being ordered by a judge to hold a second grand jury hearing), and attempted to put pressure on witnesses to get them to change their testimony. All of the many police reports are replete with references that “there was a Ron Paul sticker on the car,” or “there were several Ron Paul signs in and around the garage.”

Our “justice system” which has allowed an innocent man to spend eight months languishing in jail, unable to earn a living, away from his wife, family and friends, coupled with repeated court hearings, trial continuances, bond hearings, skyrocketing attorneys’ fees and costs, which represents our grindingly slow system that “chews up and spits out” rather than offers up any real justice, has effectively stripped John of everything he has worked so hard all his life to attain, including his tools, his home, his money, and his wife. Without his tools in his current situation John has no way to earn a living. Until the trial is over and behind him, he cannot move forward with his life and is left struggling to survive on a day-by-day basis.

The scary thing is this could happen to any one of us at any time. “There but for the Grace of God go I.” This case is not unique to John. In fact, this type of “justice” happens all across this nation to law-abiding individuals every single day, completely destroying lives and families.

While in jail John, a former teacher and preacher, started teaching reading, writing and basic math skills and also preaching Christian values to other inmates. He was tortured regularly for this and, fearing he would be killed by the guards, invented a coin based on the book of Romans so the other inmates could continue to learn the Bible without him. John made a promise to those men that if he did survive and ever got out of jail he would bring the coins to the rest of the world. These coins will be available at the fundraiser for a $15 donation.

I hope to see you all there!

Ed
