WaPo Fumes Over Russia Combating Terrorism in Syria

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

The neocon CIA house organ Washington Post makes its case through disinformation, Big Lies and fake news - featured daily in its reporting.

On Monday, WaPo headlined "Russia is betting it can push the US out of Syria. That would be devastating," saying:

"Last week a force loyal to the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad attacked US-backed Kurdish forces, drawing a devastating American air and artillery response. Three days later, Israel, Syria and Iran exchanged blows after an Iranian drone crossed into Israel…"

Fact: US forces operate illegally in Syria, occupying northern territory, terror-bombing civilians, several times attacking government and allied forces.

Fact: The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) issued a statement, saying its units were targeted by US forces after they repelled an attack by US-supported terrorists (including ISIS fighters), comprising so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Fact: Israel downed a Syrian drone in its own airspace, not an Iranian one. It may have been supplied by Tehran to Damascus to aid in combatting US-supported terrorists.

WaPo: "…Syrian government and Russian forces are pounding rebel positions east of Damascus and in the northern province of Idlib, including with chemical weapons."

Fact: So-called "rebels" include ISIS, al-Nusra and other terrorists. They alone use chemical weapons, not Syrian forces.

WaPo and other media scoundrels call US aggression in Syria "civil war." There's nothing "civil" about it.

WaPo: Russia and Iran "may have supported the attack on America's Kurdish allies east of the Euphrates River."

Fact: Syrian forces repelled an attack by US-supported terrorists in self-defense. Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah are allied with Syria's struggle to defeat ISIS and other terrorists.

WaPo: "Mr. Putin is seeking to establish Russia as the dominant power in Syria and, by extension, a major player in the Middle East - all at the expense of the United States."

"His attempt to stage a conference supplanting the UN-sponsored peace process for Syria largely flopped last month. But he has established Russia as the arbiter of Syria's multiple conflicts, capable of fueling them or shutting them down."

Fact: Putin seeks regional peace and stability. Washington pursues endless imperial aggression in multiple theaters.

Fact: Russia's Sochi peace conference drew over 1,500 delegates, largely from all strata of Syrian society. It accomplished as much as possible given Washington's rage for endless war and regime change.

Fact: Russia's good faith conflict resolution efforts are continually undermined by Washington's imperial agenda.

WaPo disgracefully blamed Russia for US-supported terrorist incidents in de-escalation zones, created as stepping stones toward conflict resolution.

"Though US forces appear able to tactically defend the pieces of eastern and southern Syria their allies control, the Trump administration lacks the leverage to pursue its stated goals in the country, which are to prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State, stop Iran from entrenching its forces there and promote a new political order that excludes the Assad regime," WaPo claimed, adding:

"Israel, too, is failing to achieve its strategic objective, which is to drive out Iranian forces."

Fact: Washington and its rogue "allies" illegally occupy northern and southern Syrian territory.

Fact: The Pentagon and CIA continue supporting ISIS and other terrorist groups in the country and elsewhere.

Fact: Syrian sovereign independence is inviolable. So is its territorial integrity. Syrians alone have the right to choose their government and leadership - free from foreign interference.

Fact: No Iranian forces operate in Syria, only advisors, helping combat US-supported terrorists - the same ones WaPo supports.

It urges escalated US aggression in Syria for regime change, opposing conflict resolution.
