Battle to Liberate Southwest Syria Underway

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

The area borders Israeli occupied Golan and Jordan - controlled by US-supported terrorists for years, liberating it a key strategic objective.

The campaign began short of a full-scale offensive to follow if terrorists refuse to surrender their heavy weapons and leave territory they illegally occupy voluntarily - what they refused to do so far.

In mid-June, the State Department warned Damascus, saying "the United States will take firm and appropriate measures in response to Syrian government violations in this area," adding:

"Russia is duly responsible as a permanent member of the UN Security Council to use its diplomatic and military influence over the Syrian government to stop attacks and compel the government to cease further military offensives."

Last Thursday, the State Department repeated its demand, warning Syria and Russia of "serious repercussions" if a southwest offensive is pursued.

US-installed/imperial tool UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres disgracefully called for an immediate halt to military actions in southwest Syria - ignoring its terrorist infestation, opposing the vital liberating campaign already begun, serving his imperial master in Washington, disgracing the office he holds.

Neocon extremist Nikki Haley demanded a halt to Syria's "destabilizing actions in the southwest and throughout" the country, adding "Russia will ultimately bear responsibility for any further escalations in ‎Syria."

Moscow and Damascus, along with Hezbollah freedom fighters and Iranian military advisors, are allied in the struggle to liberate Syria from US-supported terrorists and the presence of Pentagon forces illegally occupying northeastern and southwestern parts of the country.

According to Reuters on Saturday, Washington told terrorist "rebels" it supports in southwest Syria "not (to) expect (Pentagon) military support to help them resist a Russian-backed government offensive to regain opposition-held parts of Syria bordering Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights" - appearing to contradict the State Department warning.

"(Y)ou should not base your decisions on the assumption or expectation of a military intervention by us," the US message seen by Reuters said.

On Sunday, AMN News reported the following:

Russian warplanes "unleashed a massive assault over northeastern Dara'a, tonight, targeting several areas controlled by" US-supported terrorists.

"(T)he towns of Masikah, Aeeb, and Busra Al-Harir" were attacked. Russian aerial operations were launched in spite of State Department warnings against a southwest Syria offensive.

"Led by their elite Tiger Forces division, the Syrian Arab Army…continued their southwest…offensive on Saturday" - liberating territory held by US-supported terrorists, AMN News reported, adding:

Government forces liberated "Al-Madwarah, Al-Alali, Barghasheh, and Al-Shiyahat" - successfully "overrunning the jihadist defenses on Saturday afternoon."

The towns of Siyah Al-Sharqi, Al-Barghoutha and Al-Shomrah were captured. So far, US-supported terrorists refuse to lay down their heavy weapons and leave the areas they hold voluntarily.

AMN News explained they're outgunned and "outnumbered at nearly every front in the region."

The battle to liberate southwest Syria entirely from its US-supported terrorist infestation continues. Government and allied forces clearly have the upper hand.

The wildcard is whether US and allied warplanes will intervene - or whether Israel will try to prevent the liberation of Syrian territory near its border.

Either or both options jointly would dramatically change the dynamic on the ground, risking direct confrontation with Russia.
