The NYT v. Trump on Fake News

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Trump is on the wrong side of virtually every major issue affecting peace, equity and justice.

He's a tool of dark forces running America - a front man for the imperial state and Wall Street-led monied interests, an enemy of ordinary people he pretends to serve.

He's right about major media fake news with a caveat. To a fault, he loves Fox News, appearing on the cable channel regularly, along with relying on its fake news for information he considers reliable - far from it.

US print, cable and broadcast news suppress vital information important for everyone to know, especially on geopolitical issues, notably on Russia and other invented US adversaries.

They cheerlead US wars of aggression, reporting nothing about about its high crimes of war and against humanity, falsely blaming them on victims.

They serve as press agents for wealth, power and privilege, betraying their readers and viewers, feeding them rubbish, journalism the way it should be abandoned.

The NYT is the leading offender because of its global reach. What's featured on its front page gets worldwide coverage, including on so-called US television "news" - painful to watch or monitor even for media critics, mocking the real thing.

On Sunday, Times publisher AG Sulzberger clashed publicly with Trump, in response to the president tweeting that he had a "very good and interesting meeting at the White House" with the broadsheet's publisher, adding:

"Spent much time talking about the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media & how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, 'Enemy of the People.' Sad!"

A Times statement confirmed that Sulzberger and editorial page editor James Bennet met with Trump in the Oval Office on July 20 - requested by the White House, wanting the meeting to be off the record, very much not the case as things turned out.

According to Sulzberger, he met with Trump to "raise concerns about the president's deeply troubling anti-press rhetoric" - calling it "divisive (and) dangerous."

He lied claiming Trump's fake news accusation "is untrue and harmful." The Times and other media scoundrels consistently feature disinformation, Big Lies and fake news on major issues, especially geopolitical ones.

Sultzberger said "inflammatory language…contribut(es) to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence."

The Times and other media scoundrels cheerlead US "violence" in multiple war theaters, treating naked aggression as humanitarian intervention and democracy building - notions imperial Washington abhors under both right wings of one-party governance.

Sulzberger: "I warned (Trump that his rhetoric) was putting lives at risk, that it was undermining the democratic ideals of our nation, and that it was eroding one of our country's greatest exports: a commitment to free speech and a free press."

US bipartisan extremism eroded speech, media and academic freedoms. The Times and other media scoundrels serve as bullhorns for US propaganda.

Democracy in America is pure fantasy, not real. "(F)ree speech and a free press" are anathema notions in Washington and media editorial offices.

Journalism the way it should be is absent in America, other Western societies, and most other countries - except for alternative independent sources of news, information and analysis, the only reliable ones.
