Turkey Waging War on Syria Without Declaring It

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

Wannabe sultan Recep Tayip Erdogan is Bashar al-Assad's enemy, not ally. He covets the annexation of northern Syrian territory, especially its oil-rich areas.

Throughout years of war, he supported and continues supporting ISIS, al-Nusra, and other terrorist groups, pretending otherwise.

He granted them safe haven, letting them move freely back and forth between Syrian and Turkish territory, letting Western weapons reach them — at the same time waging terror war on Kurds internally and in Syria.

He's playing the US and Russia card simultaneously for his own self-interest, never to be trusted, willing to backstab allies for personal gain.

His actions show hostility toward regional peace and stability. He's part of the problem, not the solution, to ending years of war in Syria.

Pretending to want diplomatic conflict resolution, he repeatedly breached his Sochi agreement with Russia and Iran, Moscow failing to hold his feet to the fire – or accepting reality that he's hostile to Syria's liberation.

He and Putin are strange bedfellows, their aims in Syria world's apart. Last September, he conned Putin into delaying the liberation of Idlib province Syria – the last US-supported terrorist stronghold in the country.

Delay left their residents stranded and isolated as hostages to US imperial aims, controlled and terrorized by al-Nusra and other jihadists Washington supports, using them as proxy foot soldiers.

Syria's liberation depends on eliminating the scourge they represent, along with ending the illegal US occupation of northern and southern parts of the country — no simple or near-term way to achieve either objective.

According to Fars News, Erdogan "sen(t) thousands of terrorists to Hama and Aleppo (provinces) to reinforce Tahrir al-Sham (aka al-Nusra)" jihadists, helping them combat Syrian forces, citing the Kurdish-language Hawar News service as its source, adding:

Turkish troops and equipment were deployed to areas bordering northern Syria, perhaps positioning them for cross-border aggression on Syrian forces.

On Friday, Russia's UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia slammed false accusations about the forces of his country and Syria violating international law — a US/NATO/Israeli specialty, guilty of high crimes of war and against humanity repeatedly.

Russia's involvement in Syria is all about combating ISIS and other US-supported terrorists. Al-Nusra jihadists backed by the US and Turkey attack government forces and civilians from areas they control.

"Provocations of jihadists pose a significant threat to security of the Russian air base Khmeimim and the lives of our military," Nebenzia stressed, adding: They're using Western supplied heavy weapons.

Operations by Russian and Syrian forces in Idlib are all about "counter(ing) terrorism. We refuse to take terrorists for 'untouchables,' and we will continue our fight against them despite laments coming from" the West, Nebenzia stressed.

Fake news UN remarks falsely accused Russian and Syrian forces of bombing hospitals and schools in Idlib — a US/NATO/Israeli specialty, not how Moscow and Damascus operate.

The remarks were willful deception, UN humanitarian affairs coordinator Mark Lowcock, saying "our worst fears are now coming true" in Idlib.

Why was Lowcock and other UN officials silent about atrocities committed by US-supported terrorists, about al-Nusra jihadists holding around three million Idlib residents hostage as human shields for many months, about numerous CW attacks falsely blamed on government forces, about illegal US aggression in Syria and elsewhere, possibly more coming against Iran and Venezuela.

Why haven't UN officials laid blame where it belongs. Russia and Syria are combatting the scourge of terrorism supported by the US, the West, Turkey, Israel, the Saudis, and other regional rogue states.

Why haven't UN Secretary General Guterres, Lowcock and other UN officials denounced Washington's imperial agenda, risking global war if it's pushed too far.

US-led NATO is a machine for the manufacture of crisis conditions globally, for mass slaughter and destruction wherever it shows up — what UN officials suppress, instead pointing fingers at Russia and Syria, falsely blaming therm for US high crimes.

Nebenzia deserves the last word, saying "(i)nstead of promoting (Washington's) self-serving agenda in Syria that seeks (regime change), everyone should consolidate efforts to stabilize situation in (the country), collectively eradicate terrorism, embark on post-conflict building, and help refugees get back."

Russia's involvement is all about wanting peace and stability in Syria restored. Its efforts with Damascus, Hezbollah, and Iran alone have effectively countered the US aim to transform the Syrian Arab Republic into a vassal state.

It "reduced the terrorist threat, expanded humanitarian aid, and, most importantly, la(id) the groundwork for" resolving the conflict diplomatically.

Nebenzia's remarks are always thoughtful and accurate on issues addressed — polar opposite warmongering rage by the US and its imperial partners.
