The Mother of All Wars if the Trump Regime Attacks Iran?

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

According to an ancient proverb, included by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in one of his poems: "Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad."

Michael Hudson cited the quote, explaining that if powerful interests intend to "destroy economies, they('d) first create a wealthy class on top, and let human nature do the rest," adding:

"The acquisition of power soon leads to its abuse, to economic and social hubris. By seeking to protect its gains…a power elite locks in its position in ways that exclude and injure those below, (including by) turn(ing) government into (a money controlled) oligarchy."

The above scenario describes the US, West and Israel today, fantasy democracies run by hardline extremists, seeking self-enrichment and other benefits at the expense of world peace and ordinary people everywhere.

Wars are waged for power and profits. Without either motive they'd be world peace instead of endless conflicts.

US-dominated NATO and their imperial partners wage endless wars of aggression. The late Gore Vidal once said "Congress no longer declares war…end(ing) the Constitution as a working machine," adding:

The US wages wars "with somebody or other in order to justify the war machine. Now we have alienated almost the entire earth."

"We have been at war almost constantly since the last century. And it has not helped our institutions. Congress no longer represents the people. The courts do not practice justice any more. The armies never stop playing at being the policemen of the world and of oil."

Powerful US interests "are longing for a war with Iran. Iran is no more a harm to us than was Iraq or Afghanistan. They invented an enemy. They tell lies, lies, lies."

"The New York Times (and other establishment media go) along with their lies, lies, lies. And they don't stop. When the public that's lied to 30 times a day, it's apt to believe the lies, is not it?"

Animator Walt Kelly once said "(w)e have met the enemy and he is us." Today, he'd likely have Trump regime and congressional hardliners in mind, more aggressively waging endless wars on humanity than their predecessors.

Given their rage for unchallenged dominance, wars on Iran and Venezuela are possible, even unthinkable nuclear war with Russia and China.

Both nations represent the final obstacle to achieving US control over planet earth, its resources, and populations, wars of aggression and other hostile actions its favored strategies — despite the risk of mass annihilation.

US-led post-9/11 aggression against Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq, Libya and Syria will pale by comparison to attacking Iran if the Trump regime goes this far.

The mother of all wars since WW II will likely follow if things turn out this way.

Full-scale Iranian counterattacks would strike Israeli and US regional targets, causing mass casualties and vast destruction on all parties involved — likely the mother of all quagmires with no simple resolution, along with greatly destabilizing the region and beyond, maybe the entire planet.

If Russia intervenes as it did to combat US-supported terrorists in Syria, wanting its regional interests protected, unthinkable nuclear war could follow.

US and Israeli hardliners should be careful what they wish for. They'll get a bellyful of pain and angst if they dare attack Iran.

What's playing out with hostile rhetoric and saber-rattling is a disturbing scenario we've seen before in the run-up to US wars on targeted countries.

Post-Vietnam, they were against nations believed to be easily rolled over. It was true for the 78-day 1999 rape of Yugoslavia, initially true in the early days of the Afghan war, true for both wars of aggression against Iraq, the same against Libya.

It's not been the case for most of the AfPak war, against Yemen, or Syria, nor will it be if Iran is attacked.

Unlike other nations the US attacked post-Vietnam, Iran can hit back hard against US regional forces and facilities, Israeli targets, along with Saudi and UAE oil fields if their regimes get involved.

While Iranian forces are no match against much stronger Pentagon ones, they're able to hit back hard if attacked with power the US hasn't experienced since war in Southeast Asia, assuring a big price is paid for US aggression.

Pentagon commanders know the risk, why they oppose war on Iran. So does Trump unless he's convinced otherwise by hardliners Bolton, Netanyahu, the Saudis and UAE dreaming of what hopefully won't happen.
