Trump and Turkish Regimes in Cahoots Against Syrian Sovereignty

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

On Wednesday, Trump's envoy for regime change in Syria James Jeffrey met with Turkish war minister Yunus Emre Karaosmanoglu and other Erdogan officials in Ankara.

Their discussion was all about plotting escalated aggression in northern Syria. More on the latest developments below.

In Washington at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Trump regime deputy assistant  State Department secretary for Eurasian Affairs Christopher Robinson expressed phony concern for Turkish security at a time when its only threats are invented, not real.

Claiming Turkish forces are threatened by Syrian troops is a bald-faced Big Lie. Polar opposite is true.

Turkey occupies northern Syrian territory illegally, Syrian forces involved in liberating areas controlled by US/Turkish supported jihadists, greatly aided by Russian airpower.

Robinson falsely accused Moscow of "not honoring its commitments…say(ing) one thing, but their acts tell another story (sic)."

Russian and Syrian forces adhere scrupulously to international law, targeting jihadists, taking great pains to avoid civilian casualties — polar opposite how the US, Turkey, their imperial allies, and terrorist proxies operate.

According to AMN News on Thursday, Turkish forces attacked government troops in southwestern Aleppo province, attempting to halt their advance and push them back from Syrian territory Erdogan wants to annex, adding:

"(T)he Turkish military heavily shelled the Syrian Army's positions in the recently captured town of Kafr Halab," no casualties reported so far.

Turkish aggression followed three more jihadist-held towns liberated by government troops in Aleppo's countryside.

On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova slammed the Erdogan regime.

She blamed its "non-commitment under the (2018) Sochi memorandum and transfer of" jihadists it controls to Idlib "for the current deterioration…"

She called Israeli terror-bombing of Syrian territory a flagrant breach of its sovereignty.

She failed to explain why Putin treats unindicted war criminal/indicted civil criminal Netanyahu as an ally.

Russia's Defense Ministry accused Turkey of escalating conflict in Idlib by sending troops, weapons and munitions to the province, adding:

False "(s)tatements by Turkish representatives about alleged attacks by Russian forces on civilians in the Idlib de-escalation zone do not correspond with reality" — accusing the Erdogan regime of escalating conflict in Idlib.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Ankara failed to neutralize terrorist groups in Idlib that continue attacking Syrian forces, civilians, and "our military facilities," adding: "This is unacceptable."

On Wednesday, Syria's Foreign Ministry issued the following statement:

"After the Syrian army defeated terrorist organizations, which (Erdogan) supports, arms and trains, head of the Turkish regime comes up with empty statements that can be made only by a person who is disconnected from reality," adding:

Syria's military will continue combatting (US, NATO, Turkish, Israeli, Saudi supported) jihadists throughout the country until they're eliminated.

According to Russian reconciliation center head General Yuri Borenkov, Syrian forces established a safe zone in areas of Idlib liberated from US/Turkish supported jihadists, adding:

Russia continues its liberating campaign in Syria and will continue aiding Damascus when military operations end — including by providing humanitarian aid to displaced Syrians.

Russia's Defense Ministry called reports about large numbers of civilians fleeing the Idlib deescalation zone false, explaining:

"Many residents of the Idlib governorate leave dangerous zones and enter districts controlled by the Syrian government" for their safety and protection from US/Turkish supported jihadists.

A Final Comment

During a Wednesday Security Council meeting on Syria, its UN envoy Bashar al-Jaafari said "there is no possibility of a ceasefire in Idlib at the present time (because) Western countries and the US" support Turkish aggression in Idlib, including support for jihadists.

Syrian forces will respond as needed to repel ongoing threats to the nation's sovereignty, security and people, he stressed.
