EU and AI Hypocrisy on Belarus

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

The EU supports the Trump regime's coup attempt to replace Belarusian sovereignty with pro-Western puppet rule.

The same goes for longstanding imperial tool Amnesty International. More on AI below.

Ignoring its alliance with Washington's imperial project, its wars of aggression, its contempt for the rule of law, and record of human rights abuses at home and abroad, EU foreign ministers hypocritically announced sanctions to be imposed on around 20 Belarusian officials — a flagrant UN Charter breach they've been guilty of many times before.

Before Friday's announced sanctions on Belarus, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell defied reality with the following remarks, saying:

"We (are) friends of the Belarusian people and supporters of the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Belarus (sic)."

Fact: EU support for the Trump regime's coup attempt exposes the above Big Lie.

Borrell: "The (Belarusian) presidential elections were neither free nor fair (sic)."

Fact: Incumbent Lukashenko won overwhelmingly with a near-62% majority over political nobody/US designated puppet Svetlana Tsikanouskaya.

Fact: Only the unnecessarily inflated margin of victory was uncalled for, not the indisputable result.

The US and EU abhor democracy the way it should be, the notion banned in their countries.

Their hollow support for the process in Belarus and elsewhere abroad fools no one.

The same goes for their rhetorical support for human rights — what they time and again flagrantly breach internally and against targeted nations.

Protests in Belarus since Lukashenko's August 9 reelection were made in the USA.

There's no ambiguity about what's going on, a repeat of US practice many other times throughout the post-WW II period and earlier.

Orchestrated by the CIA, NED, and perhaps USAID in Belarus, they're an unlawful regime change plot, the EU allying with Washington's aim for another imperial trophy.

That's what has been going on in Belarus throughout most of August, likely to continue ahead.

If Belarusian authorities prove unable to control things — notably if US recruited thugs incite greater violence — Vladimir Putin promised to send law enforcement officers (not military forces) to help Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member state Belarus restore order.

The seven-member alliance supports nonviolence while pledging military support in case a CSTO nation is invaded by foreign elements.

US proxies in Belarus are behind what's going on.

On Friday, Borrell said EU foreign ministers "agree(d) to designate individuals responsible for the fraudulent election (sic) and the subsequent crackdown," adding:

"This designating shall include individuals at the highest political level."

Stressing the illegality of the action, Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said "(w)e have a negative attitude towards sanctions in general, with the exception of the UN Security Council."

It's the only body that may impose them legally, not individual nations against others — a UN Charter breach when done unilaterally or in cahoots with other law-breaking nations.

On Saturday, Putin said what's going on in Belarus is "an internal matter of (its) society and…people…"

In contrast to the made-in-the-USA coup plot, Putin stressed that Moscow is "acting in a much more restrained and unbiased way than many other nations in Europe and America," adding:

"Belarus is probably the closest country to Russia ethnically, culturally and spiritually" — why integrating the into the Russian Federation could resolve things if its people approved the move by an open, free and fair national referendum.

In mid-August, Putin warned Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Emmanuel Macron against forcefully intervening in Belarus — what's happening by  use of US proxies in the country.

Separately, imperial tool AI falsely called the Belarusian presidential election "rigged."

Commenting on excessive force by Belarusian security forces that deescalated after a few days, these elements now showing restraint, AI ignored violence by US-recruited anti-government thugs that required efforts by Belarusian authorities to counter.

Its Eastern Europe/Central Asia director Marie Struthers claimed Belarusian authorities "have shown they won't hesitate to use violence against their own citizens, and that they intend to obstruct a local investigation into these law enforcement abuses."

The above claim ignores restraint shown by Belarusian security forces except for a few days post-election.

AI cited no evidence of a coverup to suppress evidence of initial abuses long since ended.

Time and again, AI expresses support for Washington's imperial project.

Instead of condemning the Obama regime's 2013-14 coup in Ukraine, replacing democratic governance with pro-Western fascist rule, AI defied reality by blaming Viktor Yanukovych's security forces for US-orchestrated violence against them.

The organization also opposed the right of Donetsk and Lugansk democratic freedom fighters in southeastern Ukraine to resist US-installed fascist rule in Kiev — falsely accusing them of "torture and other ill-treatment of prisoners."

AI lied claiming "(t)he human rights situation in Russia-occupied Crimea (sic) continue(s) to deteriorate (sic), with further extensive reprisals against dissenting voices and religious minorities (sic)."

Reality is polar opposite AI's reinvention of reality.

The organization also supports US war on Bolivarian social democracy — blaming victimized Venezuela for Washington's diabolical plot to replace it with fascist tyranny.

Ignoring the scheme, notably by Trump regime hardliners, AI falsely accused Venezuelan security forces of "extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detentions, excessive use of force and unlawful killings as part of a policy of repression to silence dissent."

Instead of condemning Obama regime's war on Syria, now Trump's, AI falsely accused Damascus of "serious violations of international humanitarian law, including war crimes, and gross human rights abuses (sic)," adding:

"Government and allied forces carried out indiscriminate attacks and direct attacks on civilians and civilian objects using aerial and artillery bombing, killing and injuring hundreds of people in Idlib and Hama in northwest Syria (sic)."

"Government forces continued restricting access to humanitarian and medical aid to civilians living in government-controlled areas (sic)."

The above comments reinvented reality on the ground.

Instead of setting the record straight in Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine, Belarus, and other nations victimized by Washington's imperial project, AI supports it —while falsely claiming to stand tall for human rights.

Time and again, its record shows opposition to what it claims to support.
