The real key here is what Ernie first said: If 25,000 votes are cast, we are only talking about 400 ballots per station that need be counted, and only one issue is on the ballot, 'Which of ten candidates do you want in the GOP election? '

That translates into a gather around the ballot box, take them out start calling out the vote... less than an hour for two people you have a open tally and it had better match the machine. Openly total up the 60 sites. Done. $184,000! WTF?!!!!

The real question is why they are using optical readers in the first place for 400 ballots/station? Now that is fiscally irresponsible.

Dear Iowa State County Chairmen
It has come to my attention that the Iowa state GOP wants to charge the Ron Paul Campaign $184,000 to perform a verifiable manual recount for the Iowa Straw Poll. This is OUTRAGEOUS. A manual recount is both PRUDENT and NECESSARY in light of errors in the Diebold machines.

The machine computer code is not available to election monitors and are prone to computer hacking. In Fact and I am sure you are aware that the Diebold machines have been DECERTIFIED in the states of California and Florida. The importance of every vote being counted has always been the most important part of a free society. A verifiable recount is needed to ensure EVERY SINGLE VOTE is counted and counted CORRECTLY.

Iowa, Nation and the world are watching very closely to as to the results of this important election milestone and DEMANDS AN ACCURATE VERIFIABLE MANUAL RECOUNT. I am sure that with the EXORBIDENT cost of the voting this can be done without charge to the individual campaigns. I want to encourage you to do the right thing and Perform your duties to the best of your ablities and have the manual verifiable recount! Thank you for understanding.

Iowa for Ron Paul wrote:

Director of communications for the Ron Paul Campaign, Jesse Benton, stated today that the Iowa GOP would charge the Paul camp $184,000 if they wanted to verify a paper count of the coming Iowa straw poll. Today, on the Dale Williams radio show, Mr. Benton said there will be a manual electronic count of the Iowa poll results. What Mr. Benton did not explain, as exposed in a previous National Expositor Article, "it is commonly known that this manual count" with Diebold machines "would only consist of spot checks of the voting machines for device calibration purposes. This does not constitute a verifiable check of the accuracy from either an engineering or statistical perspective."

In what amounts to extortion, the Iowa GOP is telling the Ron Paul campaign they must pay an excessive amount of money to manually verify the results in this weeks' poll. Both Florida and California have recently decertified the same electronic Diebold voting machines that will be used in Iowa. The validity of the upcoming Iowa straw poll should not rest on one campaign but is the responsibility of the Iowa GOP.

You must let the Iowa GOP know that you disapprove of the use of decertified Diebold electronic voting machines and nothing short of a verifiable manual paper ballot would be acceptable for the Iowa straw poll this week.

This is a call to action, anyone who wants a verifiable election must call the Iowa GOP and demand a back up paper count. Iowa Republican Party - (515) 282-8105

You know, foolish me. You don't need to count every station. You just need to get the specific counts from each station as reported by the machines. Then you do a random drawing picking 3 to 6 of the 60 stations, and count those ballots. And the numbers better match. Quick. Within an hour of the results. If one station varies significantly you know the fix was in. If not, the odds are it was clean

To quote the late Ronnie Regan, "Trust but verify." I'll definitely go along with the "verify" part because I don't trust the GOP as far as I could pick them all up at one time and throw them. Yes, that includes the honchos in Iowa.

The stink of fear is all over them, they are terrified that Ron Paul will win by a landslide and leave all their pseudo-"top tier" candidates with their faces hanging out.

Most of them have gone on record as believing that there are 20 computer geeks in their basements doing all the voting for
Ron Paul on the internet; what's next - a ghost troop came through and marked all those paper ballots?

Between now and November, 2008, we have to make sure the Diebold machines are on the scrapheap of history. Then Ron Paul supporters will volunteer to be poll watchers and vote counters (or whatever they are called).

One last thought, since people like Jimmy Carter went down in Central America to jungle outposts to insure that their elections were honest, perhaps we can get some of those guys with their big guns to come up here and do the same for us. Turn-about is fair play.

Iowans can be bought for the price of a ticket and some BBQ.
I fail to see how IOWA holds any importance at all.
