I believe "Thou shalt not bear false witness ..." is the 9th commandment, is it not?

The Ten Commandments are given, by Moses, in Exodus chapter 20, in the Bible. A repeat of the whole thing is given, again by Moses, in Deuteronomy chapter 5, in the Bible. Because of slight differences in the way these two chapters are written in the original Ancient Hebrew, there is some disagreement as to the numbering of the Commandments.

The "Exodus thought" is to combine the following into one commandment, the 1st Commandment (NIV):

"3 You shall have no other gods before me.

"4 You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."

The Exodus thought continues to round out the Ten by splitting verse 17 into 2 commandments (NIV):

"17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.

"You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

The "Deuteronomy thought" does it the other way. It keeps the following as 2 separate commandments (NIV):

"7 You shall have no other gods before me.

"8 You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."

Then, at the end, the Deuteronomy thought keeps the "covet" commands combined (NIV):

"21 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor’s house or land, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Because of the above, there is a toggling in belief about False Witness, between whether it is the 8th Commandment or the 9th Commandment.

A study of the ancient Hebrew of what is traditionally accepted as the way Moses wrote it, will provide you with the distinctions that clarify which way is correct.
