What passes for journalism in the U.S. is opinion - bought and paid! I'm not certain when, exactly, the Fourth Estate was bought off, but I'd suspect that it began at sometime around 1913, or very shortly thereafter. Most folks don't think much about a free (uncirrupted) press, but it is a crucial institution in the development and survival of a democratic society. Our loss is monumental!
