A SWAT team bursting into a New Jersey shore home where guns and drugs were suspected of being stored was met with a hail of bullets from a gunman who opened fire on them from atop a staircase, shooting four officers and critically wounding one early Thursday.

Lakewood Patrolman Jonathan Wilson was shot in the face during the raid, and was in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. Authorities said they were cautiously optimistic he would survive despite being grievously wounded.
