The witness, who asked not to be identified, said Major Hasan wheeled on Sergeant Munley as she rounded the corner of a building and shot her, putting her on the ground. Then Major Hasan turned his back on her and started putting another magazine into his semiautomatic pistol.

It was at that moment that Senior Sgt. Mark Todd, a veteran police officer, rounded another corner of the building, found Major Hasan fumbling with his weapon and shot him.

I had wondered and then grew amused as Officer Munley's contribution -- and it was a brave one --  was bolstered and yet Sgt. Todd's involvement was briefly mentioned in a couple of accounts I read and then vanished.

Munley herself referred to her partner Todd as saying she wasn't sure who's rounds had (at that time it was reported killed) seriously wounded and more importantly stopped Hasan.

Yes, the Pentagon and the media needed a hero.  They had two -- two cops who went towards the sound of gunfire rather than securing the scene and preventing any heroes from engaging the bad guys while the SWAT team was on its way.

But undoubtedly, to the base and media PR flacks it made for a better story of the brave, good looking petite cop going up against the VERY accurate shooter -- Dr. Hasan killed 13, and wounded 29 with 100 rounds -- and now perhaps lays dying in her hospital bed.  Dang she survived --- get to her quick....and lets see about getting Todd a vacation to some undisclosed location proto....
