Valley bankruptcies shot up 82% in 2009

• East Valley Tribune
Throughout the year, the Clerk of Court’s office reported long lines of people and attorneys trying to file bankruptcy cases.

“The filings continued to climb, unfortunately as a reflection of our economy,” said Nancy Dickerson, the court’s chief deputy clerk. “We’re continuing to see a pretty big increase in Chapter 7s, and unfortunately our Chapter 11s have also gone up significantly. Chapter 11s fall into two categories: one is businesses and the other is individual debtors who don’t qualify for (Chapter 7 and Chapter 13).”
