BP concedes that a relief well will eventually have to be drilled in order to successfully shut down the existing leaking well. The graphic below explains what's happening on the ocean floor, and how the relief well will work.

It seems so simple.  Use the remote control vehicle to put a large hydraulic C-clamp similar to the jaws-of-life used by firemen to crush the drill casing either above or below the valve assembly on the ocean floor. Crush the pipe---stop the flow.
