FBI Announces Initial Operating Capability for Next Generation Identification System

The new system serves as an incremental upgrade to existing fingerprint identification system. The Next Generation Identification System, designed to revolutionize law enforcement’s ability to process fingerprints has reached its initial operating capability, the FBI announced March 8. Built by Lockheed Martin and typically referred to as NGI, the new system delivers an incremental replacement of the FBI’s Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System, or IAFIS. NGI provides automated fingerprint search capabilities, electronic image storage and electronic exchange of fingerprints to more than 18,000 law enforcement agencies and other authorized criminal justice partners 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. NGI is housed at the FBI’s Clarksburg facility and will process fingerprint transactions more effectively and accurately than IAFIS.
