Footage shows massive tornado touching down in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

• RawStory.com

In what may be one of the most damaging outbreaks of tornado in U.S. history, nearly 180 people are said to have died in the devastating storms that have ripped across the south and mid-west this month.

The video below, captured in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is especially harrowing: as a massive tornado passes by, the only sounds viewers can hear is distant rumbling of nature and the breathing of one very scared camera operator. At least 128 people died in that state alone.

In all, fatalities occurred in five states: Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and Arkansas.
