Washington, October 16 — President Barack Obama announced a new
US intervention in Africa on Friday, deploying around 100 troops to
Uganda to assist in suppression of the Lord’s Resistance Army. The LRA
and its leader, Joseph Kony, have terrorized central Africa for two
decades, carrying out civilian massacres and conscripting child
soldiers. The area of operations for the LRA, and the US operation,
encompasses parts of Uganda, Sudan, the Central African Republic and the
Democratic Republic of Congo.
