US statistics: Extreme poverty in America now at record levels

• Terrence Aym
The Bureau of Labor Statistics, Health and Human Services, and the US Census have released data that reveals America has reached the highest levels of extreme poverty in its long history. The federal government's own numbers belie the assurance offered during 2010 that the economy was recovering. The latest US Census figures reveal that during 2010 the rate of extreme poverty hit a gut-wrenching 6.7 percent. Historically, the worst numbers on record occurred during 1993 and again in 2009 when the rates peaked at a disturbing 6 percent. One out of every fifteen Americans now falls in to the category of being destitute, or very poor.
