Gambling Mormons - Romney Seeks to Deflect Rivals’ Attacks Over $10,000 Wager

Dec. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney sought to deflect criticism that he’s out of touch with ordinary voters because of his wealth, a day after coming under fire during a primary debate.

Romney dismissed the $10,000 wager he offered to rival Rick Perry during the Dec. 10 nationally televised debate, as “an outrageous number to answer an outrageous charge,” in an interview today on Fox News. “It’s like saying, ‘hey, I’ll bet you a million bucks, x, y and z,” he said.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, offered the bet in response to Perry’s claim that he had deleted parts of his book, “No Apology,” that referred to his support for an individual health-care mandate.
