Coin found in potato field sells for $430,000

• Terrence Aym - Helium
It's said that life can be strange and Lady Luck sometimes has a sense of humor.

Both adages apply to Lillian King who found an old coin buried in the middle of a potato field and walked away with more than a pretty penny.

The coin, a 1652 New England sixpence about the size of a nickel, is exceedingly rare and much sought after by coin collectors.

"We knew it was a very rare coin and we knew it would reach six figures," Lawrence R. Stack, a senior numismatic consultant at Stack's told newsday.com. "And it brought in $431,250, so I guess we did well."
