By that time, the contamination had spread across Minamata Bay, and it took 10 years and over $487 million (48.5 billion yen) to dredge its 1.5 million cubic meters of sludge. Nets preventing contaminated marine life from leaving the bay were in place from 1974 to 1997. Today the bay is considered safe to fish in again.
