According to U.S. Department of Agriculture documents reviewed by Reuters, at least 75 animals lost their hooves and were euthanized after being force fed the antibiotic Zilmax while at the Tyson Foods Inc slaughterhouse in Washington state. Out of the 285 animals reported to have died, 113 were given antibiotics or other medications to boost weight in combination with Zilmax. Zilmax is an animal feed additive created by the pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co Incorporated.
