PORTLAND — As a Special Operations medic with the U.S. Army, John Steinbaugh often treated deep traumatic wounds under extremely difficult conditions. Following a dozen deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Steinbaugh retired in 2012 -- and joined other veterans, as well as scientists and engineers, at an Oregon-based start-up company called RevMedx. The company recently requested FDA approval of a pocket-sized syringe that injects specially coated sponges into wounds. This would stop bleeding immediately, and more efficiently than gauze bandages.
