Former Pussy Riot Members Briefly Held in Sochi

• By Gregory L. White And Olga Razumovskaya
Two former members of the Russian punk group Pussy Riot were detained by police for several hours Tuesday in Sochi ahead of a planned anti-Kremlin protest close to the Olympic Games.

After their release, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova said she, Maria Alyokhina and other activists were detained twice before in the past two days. She said the detentions appeared aimed at preventing them from carrying out their protest.

"There's no opportunity for political expression here. This city is under total control," Ms. Tolokonnikova, said as she, Ms. Alyokhina and three other activists left the Adler district police station, up the hill from the rail terminal built for the Winter Olympic Games.

The women were wearing brightly colored clothes and the balaclavas that are their trademark, but Ms. Tolokonnikova and Ms. Alyokhina were recognizable by their voices and responded when addressed by name. The other three didn't identify themselves.
