With this purchase, Facebook will soon be able to offer users a chance to connect in virtual reality. Instant messaging and chat could turn into a life-life experience, as users could communicate in any environment they could imagine.
One challenge Facebook will face as it moves toward virtual reality will be getting headsets into homes.
Mark Zuckerberg has said that he believes virtual reality could become one of the "platforms of tomorrow."
The purchase price included $400 million in cash, and $1.6 billion in stock. Developers of Oculus could also earn up to $300 million in bonuses, based on the performance of their device.
