The Associated Press reports that a Kansas judge, Wednesday, granted the request for the formal name change.

Manning, a former intelligence analyst for the United States military, is serving a 35-year prison sentence for leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks.

The judge’s decision will not force the military to treat Manning as a woman such as a transfer to a woman’s prison.
It does open the door for official changes to be made to Manning’s military records.
