During the World Cup, the French football team is staying in Ribeirao Preto, in the southeast of Brazil. Thanks to agribusiness and ethanol, this city located 320km from Sao Paulo is enjoying a boom. Attracted by fast-developing luxury real estate, more and more millionaires have made Ribeirao Preto their home. But as is often the case in Brazil, the income disparities are striking and mansions often overlook the favelas of the poor.
In the poorest neighbourhoods, residents complain of being the first to lose out from the World Cup and be forgotten in the economic boom.
