Social media giant Facebook announced they will soon start tracking television habits of Americans. Company leaders will work with Neilsen Ratings to determine what Americans are watching. Facebook will center their studies on viewing carried out on tablets and other computer devices.
Watching television on mobile devices is becoming more popular, and Facebook wants to measure what shows people are watching on virtual systems.
Information about viewing habits will be transmitted to Facebook through a numerical code. Names of viewers will not be recorded, increasing the privacy of viewers. The gender and age of viewers willl be recorded for purposes of demographics.
Cheryl Idell, executive vice president of Nielsen, said, "The world is shifting radically, and so we had to evolve our measurement so that we could capture all of this fragmented viewing."
