However, the loose interpretation of that new rule reared its ugly head on Thursday night and had a huge impact on a game between two teams fighting for a playoff spot.

The call came in the eighth inning, with the Miami Marlins holding a one-run lead over the Cincinnati Reds and both teams in the hunt for the final Wild Card spot in the National League. The Reds had the bases loaded with one out, and the Marlins appeared to get out of the jam when Giancarlo Stanton made a perfect throw to double-up the runner trying to tag from third base.

However, Zack Cozart immediately threw his hands up after the tag arguing that Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis had illegally blocked Cozart's path to the plate.
