The issue of when or IF parents should spank their children gained the national spotlight when the case involving Vikings running back, Adrian Peterson. He's been suspended after using a switch to punish his four year old son. The gruesome report of the injuries and welts left on the kids body has parents everywhere asking, how much is too much? Psychology professor Marjorie Gunnoe of Calvin College in Michigan says the line should be drawn at two swats with an open hand to the arms, legs or buttocks. Gunnoe also says it IS appropriate to spank children between the ages of two and six, but that parents should never hit an adolescent child. Social scientists have done all sorts of research on the effects of corporal punishment. But many parents who perhaps never went to college aren't very aware of these studies and research.
