Ain't Nothin' Quite as Florida as Swamp Buggy Racing

• Wired

Three times each year in Naples, goggled drivers whiz down a flooded dirt track—officially christened the "Mile O' Mud"—in customized rigs as 6,000 rowdy spectators yip and howl in delight. Photographer Malcolm Lightner spent a decade capturing the races in all their down and dirty glory. "I never would have anticipated spending so long documenting a single event," he says. "I vowed to quit several times, only to be pulled back into it."

Lightner has long lived in New York, but he isn't some outside observer. He was born in Collier County, where his family goes back four generations, and his great-uncle was twice crowned Swamp Buggy King in the early '50s. He's also not-too-distantly related to the famed Chesser family, which has dominated the sport since since the 1970s.
