Colin Trevorrow will be stepping into the director's chair for the ninth installment of the "Star Wars" saga. 

Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn made the announcement at the studio's annual fan convention D23 Saturday. 

Trevorrow had recent success with Universal's surprise summer blockbuster "Jurassic World" starring Chris Pratt.

The film broke several box-office records, including highest-grossing opening weekend, and has now made over $1.5 billion worldwide. 

Trevorrow is also known for his indie hit, "Safety Not Guaranteed."
