Sean Parker, the billionaire founder of Napster and early executive of Facebook, recently donated a half million dollars towards marijuana legalization in California.

In a statement announcing the donation, Parker said, "It's very encouraging to see a vibrant community of activists … coming together around a sensible reform-based measure that protects children, gives law enforcement additional resources and establishes a strong regulatory framework for responsible adult use of marijuana — one that will yield economic benefits for all Californians."

The proposal will aim to get a marijuana legalization measure on the ballot in California for 2016. Although California has been at the forefront of marijuana normalization, the plant has remained oddly illegal in California as it becomes fully legalized in other areas of the country.

The measure that parker supported would allow adults to possess, transport and use as much as an ounce of marijuana for recreational purposes and would allow individuals to grow as many as six plants, according to the LA Times.

Parker is very involved in charity and philanthropy and has established an extremely active charitable organization. Last year, Parker gave $600 million to establish the Parker Foundation, which has put forward millions of dollars to charities for research into various diseases and social problems.

Although cannabis use is now extremely socially acceptable in the US, many celebrities are still afraid to put their support, and especially their money behind legalization efforts. However, more people in the public eye are beginning to voice public support for marijuana legalization.
