Cashier's checks, $3,000 in cash, a consultant and a pastor

Most top campaign donors in Phoenix city elections are well-known figures — developers, sports team owners and political consultants. But one major donor is a mystery to many candidates who benefited from the thousands of dollars he gave over the past five years: Bishop Monty Moody.

He leads a church in a building behind his Peoria home. Moody, his family and associates have become one of the largest sources of individual contributions to candidates running for office in Phoenix.

In the past five years, according to campaign finance records, Moody and his family gave nearly $19,000 and others listed with ties to his Redeemed International Church contributed about $9,000.

Combined, their contributions outpace the giving of many politically active Phoenix families over the same period, including the families of developer Paul Johnson, the former mayor, ubiquitous campaign consultant Jason Rose and Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver.
