The NCAA's governing board directed its three competition divisions to immediately consider changing the rules governing such benefits for athletes, and to make all such changes no later than January 2021, after a unanimous vote on Tuesday
It has long been argued that the athletes put themselves at risk of injury to help bring in what amounts to hundreds of millions in profits for some franchises, and should therefore receive a slice of the take. However, this decision will likely stop short of paying all athletes. Only those athletes who receive endorsement details will profit.
The board said the change would help "provide the best possible experience for college athletes, and that it represents an "extension of the numerous steps NCAA members have taken to improve support for student athletes."
