President Donald Trump on Thursday hinted he could fire FBI director Christopher Wray over his claim the nation's top cop and his agency is covering up their role in the Russia probe. 

'I wish he was more forthcoming. He certainly hasn't been,' Trump told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo in a phone interview. 

He argued there are documents wanted in the investigation of why the FBI started a counterintelligence probe into Trump's 2016 campaign over concern Russians were trying to influence the election. 

'There are documents that they want to get and that we have said we want to get. We're going to find out if he's going to give those documents, but certainly he's been very, very protective,' the president said.

He appeared to be referring to documents wanted by Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, the chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, who is subpoenaing the FBI as part of his probe into the Russia investigation. 

There is no evidence that Wray and the FBI haven't cooperated. 

But he took a wait and see attitude on Wray's fate, declining to say either way.

'Let's see how Wray turns out. He's going to either turn out one way or the other,' he noted.

The FBI has been Trump's favorite punching bag when it comes to the investigation into his 2016 campaign and his actions surrounding Comey's firing and the special counsel's investigation. He has blasted 'dirty cops' in the bureau and complained about a deep state working against him.
