Leaves rat race, digs himself remote earthen home with underground rotunda
• https://www.youtube.com, Kirsten DirksenHe moved to rural Arizona, bought cheap land, and started digging for material and then built part of his own earthbag adobe home directly into one of his earthen quarries.
He's created a 2-story dome half-buried underground, with a sunken kiva-like bedroom that stays naturally warm in snowy winters and cool during scorching summers, thanks to the constant temperature of the earth surrounding it. Above sits a lofted bedroom and a net bed guest lounge (also used by his cats).
The entire structure is built almost entirely by his own hands—he's doing the heavy lifting himself while maintaining a full-time job (as a realtor selling off-grid land to others).
Four years in, the home is still being completed. Sammy and his wife lived in their RV during much of the building process, eventually using it as their bathroom until he finally plumbed a toilet.
It's not the fastest build, but it's authentic—just one person learning as he goes, committed to keeping his home simple and sustainable. This is what it looks like when someone walks away from the conventional path and commits to building something real with their own hands.
