Yesterday, the FBI reported a backpack left along a Martin Luther King Day parade route in Spokane, Wash., held a radio-controlled pipe bomb capable of inflicting multiple casualties.
According to several sources including the FBI, three city workers spotted the backpack on a bench in downtown Spokane 30 minutes before the parade was scheduled to begin. Shops were evacuated and city authorities rerouted the parade. The Spokane Police Department’s bomb disposal unit neutralized the device shortly thereafter.
FBI special agent Frank Harrill, said “The potential for lethality was clear.” He also said the FBI is treating this as an act of domestic terrorism.
