Corporal Frank Buckles, the last remaining American veteran of World War I, died last week, just short of his 111th birthday. Rather than a big pageant in Arlington cemetery, or a solemn state funeral procession in the capital rotunda, we should do what the old puritan New England States did and declare a day of prayer and fasting, and get down on our knees and ask forgiveness of Almighty God for sending those young men off to be maimed and die in Europe—for nothing—except the end of liberalism
